Wedding Band

The London Assay office holds the following records for William Rowlands:
“William Rowlands moved in 1821 or before from 13 Harper Street, Great Sutton Street, Clerkenwell, where he is described as a watch case manufacturer in a Sun insurance policy of 10th October 1814, to 33 Lower Smith Street, Northampton Square, Clerkenwell, where he is described in two Sun policies of 20th June 1816 and 3rd November 1824 as a watch case maker, and where he is listed (1840, 1852) as a goldsmith, and in 1858 as a goldsmith and watch case, dial and pendant maker. He was master of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1860 and died aged 77 in 1868” (The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths. Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914. John Culme, 1987. Historical events of 1835 include the enlargement and remodelling work on Buckingham House. The designs by the architect John Nash created, now called Buckingham Palace. Also, the invention of the Analytic Machine by Charles Babbage. Considered to be the forerunner to the modern computer, the machine was able to make automatic mathematical calculations.
