An uppercase R, executed in a slightly italicised form, with the stem and diagonal leg embellished with graduating engraved flourishes. The letter incorporates approximately thirteen individual flourishes, formed where the strokes of the letter extend and develop into delicate curling and scrolling terminals.
A fine curlicue rises from the upper part of the bowl, providing a graceful extension to the letterform. The engraving is deeply cut, with the depth and modelling of the cuts creating pronounced variations of light and shadow across the letter and its ornament – a technique called threading.
The R is enclosed within a decorative festoon around the head of the signet, composed of interlacing scrolls and flourishes, creating an elaborate ornamental surround to the letter.
